National broadcaster Vietnam Television (VTV) has admitted it is partly to blame for an incident in the "Vietnam’s Got Talent" semifinal on Sunday during which a contestant mistakenly drank from a glass of acid on performing a magic stunt, while rumor has it that it was a mere ploy to draw attention to the program. "> Tran Tan Phat performed a risky stunt in the show’s fourth semifinal, which aired live on the national broadcaster’s VTV3 channel. The semi night was on air as part of the third Vietnamese season of the "Got Talent" series format that was created by Simon Cowell in the United Kingdom. Earlier this week, VietJet Air made national headlines for holding a mid-air bikini show on a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang. The airliner has since been fined VND20 million (US$961) for hosting an unapproved event, as well as for allowing passengers to use mobile phones to take pictures. Such a small penalty is surely of little concern for a fairly large company, especially in light of the free publicity they have gotten thanks to the stunt. Most Vietnamese companies are bad at advertising. TV commercials are loud, bright and obnoxious, and make me want to run away from whatever it is they are selling. For two years I've been trying to figure out why so many stores blast nauseating music from speakers set up out front, and I've yet to reach a satisfactory answer. One thing for certain is that I will never enter such a store. Resorts employ horribly sappy taglines, and oftentimes seem to have no idea how to sell themselves. Vietnam's business community should take a … [Read more...] about VietJet Air teaches Vietnam firms a PR lesson

Vietnamese movies have been leaked online before and bootleg recordings of films are not uncommon around the world, but the latest case just got a whole lot noisier following a police arrest and a producer angrily announcing plans to end her career. “Co Ba Saigon” (The Tailor) premiered last Friday and did well over the weekend, telling the story of a family holding on to its ao dai legacy in Saigon in 1969. The nostalgic movie had been highly anticipated but has been making headlines over the past couple of days for all the wrong reasons after a 19-year-old Vietnamese fan was arrested for live-streaming it on Monday afternoon.
